Hearing Protection for DJs

Practical hearing-risk reduction for DJs working around loud booths, speakers and events.

Updated 2026-08-30

Your hearing is part of your professional toolkit. Reduce unnecessary monitor level and exposure duration and use suitable protection.

  • Lower monitoring level
  • Take quiet breaks
  • Use protection
  • Seek professional advice for symptoms

Control monitor level

Use the lowest monitor or headphone level that still lets you cue accurately. Turning up headphones to overpower an already-loud booth can compound exposure.

Reduce exposure duration

Step away from loud areas during breaks when possible. Even short quiet periods can reduce cumulative exposure across a long event shift.

Use appropriate protection

High-fidelity musicians earplugs can reduce level while preserving more spectral balance than basic foam plugs. Fit and attenuation vary, so choose protection that works for your environment.

Take symptoms seriously

Persistent ringing, muffled hearing, pain or sudden changes warrant medical attention. This guide is general education, not medical diagnosis or treatment.

Learning module

The curriculum now includes a dedicated DJ Hearing Safety module covering monitoring habits and exposure management.
