Toronto Noise Rules for Working DJs
What Toronto DJs should know about amplified-sound limits, late-night thresholds and why venue/event organizers need to manage compliance.
Toronto’s Noise Bylaw sets measurable limits for amplified and musical-instrument sound at points of reception, with lower limits during 11 p.m.–7 a.m. hours. DJs should not assume that an indoor or outdoor event can simply “turn up”; confirm venue/event responsibilities and any exemption conditions in advance.
Current published limits
The City currently states that amplified/musical sound measured over 10 minutes at an outdoor living-area point of reception must not exceed 55 dB(A)/70 dB(C) from 7 a.m.–11 p.m. or 50 dB(A)/65 dB(C) from 11 p.m.–7 a.m. Indoor living-area limits are lower.
Events with exemptions
The City’s event guidance describes separate conditions for events operating under an approved noise exemption. Do not assume an exemption exists; confirm with the organizer/venue.
DJ workflow
Advance curfew, limiter/house-system rules, outdoor speaker orientation, sound-check window and who has authority to request level reductions. If venue staff or the organizer sets a level limit, treat it as part of the job.
