Booking a vinyl DJ

A vinyl set changes the feel of a room. It is slower to set up, the music is chosen from crates rather than a hard drive, and guests tend to notice the turntables. The 4 DJs and services on this page publicly offer vinyl or vinyl-focused sets in Toronto.

Vinyl suits cocktail hours, restaurant and bar nights, record-store events and weddings where the couple wants a particular era or sound. It is less suited to a night with many requests, because a vinyl DJ can only play what they brought.

Ask about the setup. Turntables need a stable surface away from speakers and foot traffic, or the needle will skip. In a crowded room or on a sprung dance floor, the DJ may need a riser or isolation feet.

Ask what happens to requests and to specific songs you must hear, such as a first dance. Some vinyl DJs bring a digital backup for those moments; others are strict about all-vinyl sets.

Listings on this page include Record Collective, KALLI and Olekhar. If you want a full night of vinyl at a wedding, confirm the DJ has done that length of event before, and talk through the ceremony and speeches, which usually need microphones and a separate playback source.

Prices vary a lot for vinyl work. Use the price page to compare the standard parts of a quote, then ask what the vinyl element adds.

Vinyl DJs often bring a narrower but deeper selection than an open-format DJ: soul and funk, disco, jazz, house, reggae or a particular decade. Ask what the crates for your night will hold, and whether they can tailor them if you send a few artists or records you love.

Finally, ask how long setup and soundcheck take. Turntables and a mixer are quick to place, but levelling them and checking for feedback in a new room can take longer than plugging in a controller.

Before you choose

Ask whether the booking is all-vinyl or mixed format, what equipment is required, and whether the venue can support the setup.
