Toronto DJ Business Guide

For working DJs: pricing, contracts, insurance, inquiries, marketing, client communication and building a sustainable Toronto DJ business.

Updated 2026-08-30

Treat DJing as a service business when clients are paying you. Clear scope, contracts, payment terms, preparation and reliability protect both sides.

  • Price from scope, not from ego or competitor guessing.
  • Use written agreements.
  • Track every inquiry and source of work.

Define your offer

Separate performance, MC, sound, lighting and add-ons. This makes quotes easier to compare and prevents scope creep.

Use a written agreement

Include event date, venue, start/end times, access, equipment, payment schedule, cancellation, overtime and responsibilities. Have a qualified Ontario lawyer review your contract if you need legal certainty.

Build a referral engine

Venues, planners, photographers, cultural organizations and other DJs can be durable referral sources. Reliability creates repeat relationships.

Measure the business

Track lead source, close rate, average booking value, travel time, setup hours, equipment costs and referrals. Gross booking price is not the same as profit.
