What to ask a Latin DJ

Latin music at a Toronto event can mean a salsa social, a quinceañera, a wedding with family from several countries, or a reggaeton-heavy party. The 13 DJs on this page publicly list Latin music or Latin events.

Ask what the crowd will dance to, not just what genre names the DJ lists. Salsa and bachata dancers want tracks they can partner-dance to at steady tempos. A reggaeton crowd wants current hits and energy. A quinceañera often needs a vals, a surprise dance and family traditions timed into the night.

Bilingual hosting matters at many Latin events. If the MC will speak in Spanish, Portuguese and English, ask them to show you how they handle it in a recording or a call. A DJ who mixes well but cannot host in the family's language may need a separate MC.

Some events want live percussion or a band alongside the DJ. Ask whether the DJ works with musicians regularly and who handles the sound for both.

Listings that mention this work include Alley Entertainment, La Nueva Movida Latina and DJ Yedina. As with any event, compare quotes on the same scope: hours, ceremony audio if needed, lighting and overtime. Our price page shows what Toronto DJs publish for those items.

If dancers are coming specifically to dance, tell the DJ the mix you expect, for example a rotation of salsa, bachata and merengue, or a social with a reggaeton block at the end. Experienced Latin DJs plan sets around those ratios, and they will ask about the floor surface and how much space dancers have.

For a wedding, also agree how the Latin sets fit around the rest of the night, including dinner music, speeches and any songs for the families that need to be played at a set time.

Before you choose

Ask about the exact mix you want, whether that means salsa, bachata, merengue, reggaeton, Latin pop or an open-format blend.
