What open format means in practice

Open format is what most Toronto weddings, birthdays and mixed-age parties want: a DJ who can move from hip-hop to Top 40 to Afrobeats to house to throwbacks in one night, reading the room as they go. The 86 DJs on this page publicly describe open-format or multi-genre sets.

The range of an open-format DJ is wide, but every DJ has a centre of gravity. Ask what they play most often and what their best night sounded like. Someone who grew up in hip-hop and R&B will build a different night from someone who came up through house and disco.

Requests are a big part of open-format work. Decide whether you want guests to request freely, through you or a host, or not at all, and tell the DJ. Give them a short do-not-play list as well; it is more useful than a long must-play list.

For mixed-age crowds, ask how they handle the transition from dinner to dancing and from older guests to younger ones later in the night. That pacing is the main thing that separates experienced open-format DJs.

Listings on this page include 586 Event Group, Alley Entertainment and Alpha Entertainment. Many of them also work weddings and corporate events, so check the dedicated pages for those if your event is one of them.

When you compare quotes, line up hours, equipment, MC duties and overtime side by side. The quote comparator does that for two quotes at a time.

Equipment varies more than people expect. Some open-format DJs bring a full sound system, lighting and microphones; others play only on house sound. Make sure the quote says which, and that the speakers are sized for your room and guest count.

Last, ask whether the DJ plays clean edits by default. At family events and workplaces, explicit lyrics can be a problem even late in the night.

Before you choose

Open-format can mean very different things. Tell the DJ the eras, genres and crowd you expect so you can hear whether the fit is right.
