Venue Sound & AV for DJs
How to evaluate house sound, integrated AV, DJ equipment responsibilities and technical handoffs at Toronto event venues.
“AV included” is not a technical specification. DJs need to know the actual playback connection, monitoring, microphones, speaker coverage, technician requirements and what happens if house equipment fails.
What integrated sound usually tells you
It suggests infrastructure exists, but not necessarily that it meets the needs of dancing, speeches and DJ monitoring. The Broadview Hotel publishes integrated sound for several event spaces; The Carlu publishes state-of-the-art AV; The Great Hall publishes concert-quality sound and lighting in Main Hall and Longboat Hall.
Ask for the signal path
Confirm the connection from the DJ mixer/controller to the house system, balanced input format, available channels, booth-monitor solution, gain responsibility and who is permitted to change the system.
Microphones
Specify the number and type of wireless microphones, ceremony requirements, backup mic and who replaces batteries or troubleshoots interference.
Hybrid systems
Sometimes the best solution is house speakers with DJ playback gear; other times the DJ supplies a complete system. Put the division of responsibility in writing.
